For athletes
Athlete Data Notice
MatchPoints builds athlete profiles from publicly available competition results. If you are a professional or rising tennis athlete, we may hold information about you even though you have never registered with us and we have never contacted you. This notice explains what we hold, where it comes from, why we are allowed to process it, who sees it, and how to object.
Object to us processing your data
You can object to our processing at any time, ask us to make your score private, and ask us to correct, restrict, or erase what we hold. You do not need an account. A request we uphold still holds after our data is next refreshed. Your profile is built from public competition results, so closing an account does not remove it: its public elements stay visible to customers who unlock it, and a private score is never shown. Section 9 explains what each request does.
1. Who we are, and how to reach us
MatchPoints Sports Analytics Limited is the controller for the personal data described in this notice. It is a private company limited by shares, registered in Ireland under company number 823485, with its registered office at Apartment 20, Block A, One, Lime Street, Dublin 2, D02 W728, Ireland. You can reach us about any data matter through the data request form, which does not require an account.
Where a brand or agency uses the platform to reach decisions about athletes, that brand or agency acts as a separate, independent controller for its own decisions and its own subsequent use of any data it receives.
2. Who this notice covers
This notice covers athletes whose profiles we build from public sources, whether or not they hold an account with us. If you hold an account, the Privacy Policy also applies to the data you give us directly.
3. The categories of data we process
- Competition and ranking data. Name, tour, nationality, date of birth, playing hand, ranking and ranking history, and match results. This is career-relevant, professional information of the kind public tennis rankings and results already make available.
- Audience and social metrics. Where available, observational audience information about an athlete's public professional accounts — follower counts, engagement rates, audience geography and language, and brand affinity signals. This is shown as context alongside the Index; it is not a scored input to it.
- The derived Match Point Index. A calibrated probability we compute about you from the data above, together with the bands, percentiles, and confidence values derived from it. See section 8.
- Representation. Where an agency represents you on MatchPoints, which agency it is and whether that is confirmed. Other agencies who unlock your profile see the name of a confirmed agency; an unconfirmed claim is shown without a name.
We do not process special-category data about athletes, and we do not build profiles beyond career-relevant professional information.
4. Where we get it
Competition and ranking data comes from publicly accessible sources: tour ranking tables and published results. Audience and social metrics come from third-party audience data providers, and describe public professional accounts. The Index is not collected — we compute it ourselves from the data above.
Representation details come from you or your agency.
We do not buy personal data for advertising, and we do not obtain data from private or non-public sources.
5. Why we process it, and our lawful basis
Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest. Stated specifically, that interest is:
- Purpose. To analyse publicly available competition results in order to identify breakthrough potential, so that athletes can be discovered by brands and agencies and rising talent gains commercial visibility it might not otherwise get.
- Necessity. The analysis cannot be done without the underlying results and ranking data. It is the minimum data needed for the purpose, and it is already professional information in the public domain.
- Balancing and safeguards. We limit processing to career-relevant, professional information that is already public; we do not process special-category data; identities and Index values are access-controlled (section 6); and any athlete — registered or not — can object or ask us to make their score private at any time, and a request we uphold survives our data refreshes (section 9).
You have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interest. See section 9.
6. Who sees your data
- Brands, agencies, and enterprise customers with a verified account and a subscription that covers you, within the access controls described below.
- Our service providers (processors) who host and run the platform on our instructions under data-processing agreements: our database and hosting provider, our deployment provider, our product-analytics provider, our third-party audience data providers, and a payment provider for billing our customers.
- Authorities, where required by law.
Identities, Index values, bands, and confidence are shown only to viewers whose role and verification grant access, and only for athletes in scope for them. Visitors and unapproved accounts see a bucketed, anonymised view with no identities and no Index values. These controls are enforced in the database, not only in the interface, so access cannot be widened from the browser.
We never publish or sell your contact details. A brand cannot contact you through MatchPoints unless you have registered or you are represented on the platform by a verified agent — and even then, contact runs through an in-platform message thread rather than by handing your details over.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it for third-party advertising.
7. International transfers
Some of our providers process data outside the European Economic Area. Each such transfer relies on an adequacy decision or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. You can ask us which safeguard applies to a given provider using the request form.
8. The Match Point Index is profiling
The Match Point Index is produced by automated processing that constitutes profiling: we compute a score about you as an individual from your competition record.
The logic, in plain terms. A statistical model, trained and validated on the historical records of comparable athletes, estimates the probability that an athlete with your profile reaches a stated ranking outcome within a stated horizon. It reads your ranking level and trajectory, your results and the level of the opposition, your age relative to that ranking, and how comparable careers developed from the same position. It is a statement about likelihood across a population, not a prediction that you personally will or will not achieve that outcome. The full methodology, including which signals carry weight and how the model is calibrated and tested, is published on our model methodology page.
The consequences. Brands and agencies see the Index as one input when deciding which athletes to research, watch, or approach. A high score can bring you commercial attention; a low score can mean you receive less of it. We do not use the Index to make decisions about you that produce legal or similarly significant effects by solely automated means: every decision that affects you — whether to approach or sponsor you — is made by a brand or agency exercising human judgement as a separate controller, and our terms prohibit using the Index as the sole basis for such a decision.
You can ask us how your Index value was derived, contest its accuracy, and ask for it to be corrected or made private.
9. Your rights
All of these are available to you whether or not you hold an account, through the data request form. We act on a valid request without undue delay and in any event within one month.
- Closing your account. If you hold an athlete account, closing it ends your use of MatchPoints: we delete your account and your claim to your profile, as the Privacy Policy describes. It does not remove your athlete profile or its score, which we build from public competition results rather than from your account (section 5).
- Making your score private. You can make your score private at any time: in your account settings if your athlete account is linked to your profile, or through the request form. A private score is not shown to brands or agencies anywhere on MatchPoints. Your profile stays listed with its public elements, and your score stays private if you later close your account.
- What stays public. Your profile always has public elements: your name, tour, nationality, ranking and results, which the tours already publish. A customer who chooses to unlock your profile sees them, even when your score is private.
- Object to processing (Article 21). Because we rely on legitimate interest, you can object at any time on grounds relating to your situation. We weigh them against the interest described in section 5. Where we uphold your objection, we take your profile off MatchPoints: customers no longer see it or its score, and it stays off when our data is refreshed. Where we do not, we tell you why, and you can complain to a supervisory authority (section 12).
- Access. Ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, and for the information in this notice as it applies to you specifically.
- Correction. Ask us to fix anything inaccurate or incomplete — including an Index value you believe rests on wrong inputs.
- Erasure. Ask us to delete the data we hold about you. We assess a request about a profile built from public results against section 5, and tell you what we delete, what we keep, and why.
- Restriction. Ask us to pause processing while a correction or an objection is being assessed.
- Portability, where it applies, and the right to withdraw consent where we rely on it (for athlete profiles built from public sources, we do not).
Exercising these rights is free. We may ask you for information that lets us confirm you are the athlete in question — proportionate to what you are asking for, and never more than we need.
10. Retention
We keep athlete profile data while it is relevant to the Index, broadly while you are within the ranking and age window it covers, and delete or anonymise it once it is no longer needed. We delete it sooner where we uphold an erasure request. Where we uphold an objection or erasure request, we keep the minimum record needed to honour it, so that a later data refresh does not undo it. Closing an account does not shorten how long we keep a profile built from public results.
11. Young athletes
The platform is intended for professional athletes and business users. Some professional athletes in our cohort may be under 18. We process only public, career-relevant professional information about them, and we give particular weight to their rights in any objection or removal request.
12. Complaining to a supervisory authority
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data or your request, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority — in Ireland, the Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie), or the authority in the EU country where you live or work. Complaining to an authority does not stop you from raising the same issue with us directly.
13. Changes
We will update this notice as the service develops. Material changes will be published here.
